What's the meaning of "reference initials" ?

I came across "reference initial" many times, but I am not sure of its Chinese meaning.
Can someone here help me with it?

The operator's reference initials indicate who keyed the letter. Key the initials in lowercase and position them at teh left margin two lines below the printed signature line.

任何文件的名字首写，还多数是大写。

谢谢你的这些宝贵资料.
但我觉得还是理解为打字的人首字母缩写好些.我看了好几封信了,这个缩写都出现在写信人名字下面,和写信人缩写的内容不一样.
