1.Insect would devour all our crops and kill our flocks and herds,if it were not for the protection we get from insect-eating animals. 关键就是后半句“if it were not for the protection we get from insect-eating animals”这非真实条件状语从句中，“it were not for”在句子中该怎么理解，“it”指的是什么，起什么用，为什么用“for”呢，“it”指的是什么，起什么用，这个从句该怎么分析。 2.It is impossible to make more than the wildest guess at how many insect they kill. 比较难理解的就是“make more than the wildest guess at”，其中的“more than”该怎样准确的理解它，在句子中起什么作用？ 谢谢您的答疑，对我的帮助很大！ |

（1）此处的it做无人称动词的主语，和指天气，时间，距离的用法相同，此处是指虚指情况。 例如：If it hadn’t been for you, I don’t know what I would have done.要不是你，我真不知道会干出甚麽事儿来。（参见 上海译文社“英汉大词典”P.936） （2）more than 此处为副词性用法， 其语义为Over what you might expect .(超出预料）例如They were more than glad to help. 可能令人费解的是本句中的 more than不是用在一般的形容词或副词前，而是用在了 the wildest guess 之前。 我们应看到用在形容词最高级之前的the 与通常加在名词前直接修饰名词的情况是不同的，在这里它直接修饰形容词，是对最高级本身的限定说明，此时的the 具有副词的属性。这种情况和the….the …..用法中的第二个.the 做副词修饰比较级的形容词或副词的用法是一样的。所以more than the wildest guess 这个短语里more than 是修饰the的状语。 |
