Integrated debugger
The IDE also launches the debugger. The debugger can execute your program one statement at a time, and suspend execution when control reaches a specified point. When the debugger stops a program, you can view the chain of function calls, examine and change the values of variables, and inspect the contents of the processor's registers.
The CodeWarrior debugger for ColdFire debugs software as it runs on the target board. It communicates with the target board through a monitor program or through a hardware protocol, such as BDM. Hardware protocols require additional hardware to communicate with the target board, such as a paralel cable and connectors, sometimes called a 'wiggler'.
For general information about the debugger, including all of its common features and its visual interface, read the IDE User Guide. For specific information about debugger settings for ColdFire, see "Debugging" on page 149.
ColdFire Compiler Settings and Capability
The CodeWarrior compiler for ColdFire is an ANSI compliant C/C++ compiler. This compiler uses the Common BackEnd Architecture. The Coldfire backend is capable of more optimizations on the machine level.
The compiler offers new improved features which are listed in the release notes that can be found on your installation CD.
When used with the CodeWarrior linker for ColdFire, you can generate ColdFire applications and libraries that conform to the standard ABI.
For more information about the CodeWarrior C/C++ language implementation, refer to the C Compilers Reference. For information about the ColdFire back-end compiler, see "Target Settings" on page 41, and "Compilers" on page 63.
